ROCK provides opportunities for youth in multiple environments,
such as sports and fitness, outdoor adventures and learning
enrichment. This allows ROCK to recognize each child's unique
strengths and abilities and encourage their growth and development
in all areas.
Skill Drills
...offer instruction and encouragement to elementary school
participants in three rotating sports, including basketball,
volleyball and soccer. For each sport, there are six consecutive
weeks of three hour Saturday morning sessions, all designed
for elementary and intermediate sports skill development and
conditioning. Each Skill Drill session emphasizes conditioning
and fitness exercises, non-competitive skill development drills
and team-building activities. The minimum volunteer to child
ratio for all sessions is 1:3, and each of the Skill Drills
serve up to 50 kids per session.
Student Adult Leadership Training (SALT)
...provides opportunities to middle school participants who
have positively participated in ROCK. Its goal is to provide
new and challenging outdoor adventure opportunities as well
as leadership training and team building exercises for middle
school students. Similar to Skill Drills, SALT consists of
three six-week Saturday sessions comprised of outdoor field
trips, community service projects and team building activities.
Outdoor field trips consist of activities such as mountain
biking, ropes courses, indoor rock climbing, camping and river
rafting. ROCK hopes that SALT will additionally serve as a
natural link to community involvement within the organization
as these students reach high school and beyond.
After School Sports & Fitness
...provides participants with the opportunity to be active
during the weekday in various activities including soccer,
martial arts and volleyball. This program promotes team building,
skill development and lifetime fitness. Activities are structured
to encourage practicing of sports skills and techniques, learning
how skills are used within a team context and understanding
how a sports team works together. Coaches and volunteers focus
on skill development with the intention of deepening participants'
self-confidence and enjoyment of physical activities while
increasing their teamwork and peer leadership skills.
After School Homework & Tutoring
...gives both elementary and middle school participants homework
support so necessary in Visitacion Valley public schools.
ROCK's team of staff and volunteers strive to provide both
one on one and group learning in an after school setting.
Participants are rewarded for good behavior and grades with
pizza parties, field trips and fun activities throughout the
school year.
Learning Enrichment
...offer children in all Visitacion Valley public schools
the chance to work in small groups within a teacher's long-term
teaching strategy to provide students with more attention
and assistance. ROCK aims to build relationships and create
activities and resources for children that will develop and
improve fundamental literacy skills and academic support while
encouraging gender and cultural pride. Working one-to-one
or in small groups during the school day, ROCK volunteers
encourage the growth in essential skill development of at-risk
learners.
In addition, ROCK maintains a partnership with the San Francisco
Recreation and Parks Department Latchkey Program in which
volunteers assist with homework, art projects and other recreational
activities. This partnership aims to provide the participants
a volunteer to student ratio of 1:5, which in ROCK's absence
would be 1:25. ROCK's learning enrichment groups also serve
as an additional means to connect with the children in the
Visitacion Valley elementary schools and encourage participation
in ROCK's after school and weekend sports and fitness programs.
Summer Leadership Camp
...is a rare opportunity for ROCK participants to leave the
Bay Area and discover an intensive, outdoor learning experience
in a residential camp setting. For approximately 80% of the
youth that attend, it is the first camp experience of their
lives. Themes of trust building, team work, risk taking, short
and long term goal setting and personal achievement shape
all camp activities, which include white water rafting, ropes
course, hiking, team sports, swimming and other water sports.
The ROCK volunteers who serve as camp counselors devote part
of their own summer vacations to living and exploring with
these children.
Youth Center
...provides a safe, fun and respect-filled community where
students can build positive relationships with caring adults
and each other while engaging in creative, youth development
activities. The youth center is equipped with staff and volunteers
to provide homework assistance and tutoring. In addition,
students may participate in a variety of activities such as
martial arts, gardening, cooking and computers.
